Mayors to be notified of prisoner releases

The justice ministry has embarked on a new program to help municipalities take any necessary precautions to protect former victims.

The Hague – The mayors of ten major cities will be notified when certain criminals are released from prison under a new initiative by the justice ministry.

The program includes people convicted of serious violence or sex crimes.

Once the mayors are notified, they can then decide whether to take precautions in the interest of public order and security.

Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht are among the cities who will participate in the program.
The measure has been introduced as an experiment following several incidents that concerned convicted paedophiles who wanted to return to their former place of residence.

Their neighbours demanded measures to prevent the paedophiles from accidentally meeting their victims.

The results of the trial will be determined in March 2010.
