THE HAGUE – Wim Deetman announced his departure as mayor of The Hague on Friday.
He sent a letter to the municipal council today to inform them that he "hopes to join the Council of State at the start of next year."
62-year-old Deetman (Christian democrat CDA) has been mayor of the city since 1996. Previous to that he served as minister of Education and Science. From 1989 to 1996 he was speaker of the Lower House of Parliament.
