THE HAGUE - Roads in the Netherlands will be busy today. Motorists should allow extra time because, with the start of the school holidays in the centre of the country, 1.1 million people will go on holiday today of whom 600,000 will go abroad, according to the motorists association ANWB.

The ANWB also recommends that motorists steer clear of Nijmegen, which is hosting the four-day walking event. Tilburg is also mentioned as a black spot because many people will visit the annual fair there.

Road works can also cause long delays. Traffic jams are likely on the A16 motorway near Rotterdam this weekend, according to the ANWB. Lane closures on the A2 at Eindhoven and in Zuid Limburg, on the A9 at Amstelveen and on the A73 at Malden will also cause delays.
