Massive child abuse scandal in Amsterdam

A major sex abuse scandal involving dozens of children has come to light in Amsterdam.

Up to 50 children, mostly toddlers, were reportedly abused by a temp at two day care centres. The 27-year-old suspect has confirmed the systematic abuse during a period of a year and a half. He was arrested on Tuesday after pornographic images of the children appeared on internet sites in the United States.

The victims' parents and the parents of other toddlers who frequented the day care centres were informed at two closed-doors gatherings held at The Grand Hotel on Sunday evening. The meeting was attended by Amsterdam Mayor Eberhart van der Laan and Chief of Police Bernard Welten.

"The impact on the parents concerned is enormous," Mayor Van der Laan told a special news conference later on Sunday. He offered the parents professional assistance and called upon the media to observe restraint in covering this delicate case.

In a highly unusual move, booking photographs of the suspect were shown at the press conference. The man was born in Latvia but holds Dutch nationality.
