THE HAGUE – Jan Marijnissen lashed out fiercely at Geert Wilders and Rita Verdonk at a Socialist Party meeting on Saturday, the Volkskrant reports. The SP leader called the two former VVD members "extreme right".
Wilders is guilty of discrimination, says Marijnissen. He drew comparisons to the apartheid regime in South Africa, the US in the 1960s and the genocide in Rwanda in the 1990s. "Making a distinction on the basis of religion is a fatal mistake," Marijnissen told his fellow party members.
The opposition leader sees it partly as his task to keep voters away from Verdonk and Wilders. "What are we going to do about that, people often as me," said Marijnissen – who also announced he wanted to lead his party in the next elections. "The answer consists of two words: be better. We must choose the right approach. Extreme right candidates will benefit if we leave the problems unsolved."
Wilders did not want to comment in response on Sunday.
