AMSTERDAM — A 40-year-old woman was in critical condition on Monday after she was stabbed several times by her ex-husband in front of a crèche in the Dutch city of Maastricht, the police said.

The woman was bringing her three-year-old child to the daycare facility on the Kloosterstraat in Maastricht shortly before 8am when the attack took place. Her 11-year-old child was waiting to be brought to a primary school. Both children witnessed the stabbing, as did another mother who was bringing her child to the crèche.

The traumatised children were being cared for by relatives yesterday, and the police asked Victims Support (Slachtofferhulp) to comfort people at the crèche.

The victim's 45-year-old ex-husband surrendered himself at a police station an hour after the stabbing and he was arrested. The man, who lives in Maastricht, was reported to be in a distressed state.

The police said they suspected the incident arose out of a dispute about visitation rights in relation to the children.
