26 January 2006, AMSTERDAM — A 20-year-old man was severely wounded in an explosion in the Dutch town of Ridderkerk in the early hours of Thursday morning.

AMSTERDAM — A 20-year-old man was severely wounded in an explosion in the Dutch town of Ridderkerk in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The man from Schiedam lost an arm and part of one leg in the blast on St. Jorisstraat in the town near Rotterdam.

The police are saying little about the circumstances. A spokesperson would confirm only that the pedestrian was picking something up from the street at about 2am when the explosion occurred. It is not clear what the object was.

The man is in critical condition in hospital. A 20-year-old man from Rotterdam who was with the victim was arrested.
