AMSTERDAM — A 56-year-old man lay dead for two to three days in his room at the 'Vita Nova' nursing home in the Dutch town of Oss, the local healthcare council reported on Thursday.
The man, who has not been named, was in an usual position in the nursing home. He no longer needed medical care and had lived totally independently for some time. He chose not to have any contact with fellow residents or the staff, according to a statement issued by the council. He shopped for himself and did not take part in group activities at the care home.
As a result the staff did not notice is absence. His fellow residents only became concerned when he had not collected his post for several days. The door to his room, which he always kept locked, was opened and his body was discovered. A doctor estimated he had been dead for two or three days.
The healthcare council has submitted a report on the incident to the National Health Inspectorate. A spokesperson for the Inspectorate said a decision will be taken based on this report whether to launch a full investigation and whether to impose sanctions on the nursing home.
