AMSTERDAM — A 37-year-old man, identified only as C. van O. from Putten, has been sentenced to 15 years in jail for murdering his wife.
An appeals court in Arnhem confirmed on Thursday his conviction for killing his 36-year-old wife in May 2003. Last year, the trial court in Zutphen imposed a 20-year term for the crime.
Prosecutors claim the man could not come to terms with the fact his wife planned to leave him and that she had been given provisional custody of their children.
The case was made more noteworthy because a forest ranger had discovered a newly-dug pit in the forest around Putten in April 2003, a month before the victim disappeared.
Cameras were placed around the pit for some days, but were later removed when no suspicious activity was detected.
The forest ranger later contacted the police about the pit after hearing of the woman's disappearance. Police found the woman's body had been buried in the pit.
