Leeuwarden – A 48-year-old man from Dokkum was fined EUR 420 for killing his canary, rules a court in the northern Dutch city of Leeuwarden.

In 2008, police were called to the man’s house because he was seen slashing the tyre of his car with a kitchen knife. Officers then found a decapitated canary, hanging upside down by its legs from a wooden box, in his house.

The man explained to the police that the canary was no longer able to fly, so he decided to put it out of his misery by squeezing it to death and cutting off its head.

The judge rules that the man’s explanation was not convincing. He said that if you wanted to put a disabled bird out of its misery, there is no need to decapitate it and hang it up on a box.

As killing an animal is not an offence in the criminal code of the Netherlands, the man was convicted for “disadvantaging” his canary, reports
