A 24-year-old man who tried to evade police capture by jumping into a river has died in hospital in the southern town of Dordrecht.

DORDRECHT - On Friday night, police near the town began following two men travelling in what they identified as a stolen car.

The pursuit turned into a high-speed chase, which ended when the stolen vehicle struck a crash barrier on the N3 between Dordrecht and neighbouring town Papendrecht.

One of the men then leapt out of the car and jumped into the nearby river Wantij.

He had to be rescued by local fire fighters and was taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia.

He failed to recover and died on Saturday morning. The other man in the car, who was 21, was detained by police. Both men were from Tilburg.
