The investigating magistrate in Dendermonde has arrested a 40-year-old man from Zele on suspicion of human trafficking and rack-renting.

The public prosecution department says that at least 20 Polish workers were exploited by the man’s construction company.

They were housed in dwellings in squalid conditions, forced to work unreasonably long hours, and were paid little, if at all.

Suspect Alain M. “lured the [Polish nationals] to Belgium on the pretext of giving them work and took advantage of their ignorance and socially vulnerable position,” said spokesperson for the authorities Theo Byl.
