Gunmen in northern Mali have kidnapped a Dutchman, a Swede and a man with dual British-South African nationality. A German man was shot dead when he offered resistance.

The Westerners were in the restaurant of a hotel in the northern town of Timbuktu on Friday when they were abducted by suspected Islamists. The wife of the seized Dutchman managed to avoid being kidnapped by hiding in a tent.

It is the second hostage-taking in the region in two days, Malian government and local sources say. On Thursday, two French nationals were kidnapped from their hotel in the same remote desert region, where local agents for al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb operate.
