AMSTERDAM – The hospitality industry is facing a shortage of at least 54,000 people as the busy summer season starts. Hospitality sector organisation Koninklijk Horeca Nederland (KHN) told the Telegraaf on Thursday that it foresees major problems.

The shortage amounts to more than a third of the total number of jobs in the sector.

Leo van Eeghen, chairman of the restaurants division of KHN, said that tensions are running high. "Restaurants alone have 20,000 job openings. That is an astonishingly high number."

The personnel shortage in the sector is increasing the workload for employees and could mean slower service for customers.
