Major power failure in Betuwe

More than 100,000 homes near the town of Tiel were left without power after two electrical substations in the region broke down.

Spokesperson Jelle Wils from grid operator Tennet said it was not yet clear why the substations broke down. He was also unable to say how long it would take to bring them back on line.

The Rivierenland hospital in Tiel said it was not experiencing any problems as it’s “emergency generators are working just fine”, but a number of trains are stranded in the region because some points in the rails are no longer working.

Rail passengers travelling between Utrecht Central Station and 's-Hertogenbosch are being advised to travel via Nijmegen. Passengers travelling from Eindhoven to either Amsterdam or Utrecht should travel via Rotterdam.
