A major fire is blazing at an industrial estate in Valkenswaard in the southern Dutch province of North Brabant. The fire started in a plastic waste processing plant and soon spread to other buildings.

Several fire brigades are engaged in fighting the blaze. The smoke can be seen from the city of Eindhoven ten kilometres away.

The mayor of Valkenswaard has literally sounded the alarm and the regional radio station has switched to emergency service broadcasting.

It is not yet known whether the fire is producing toxic fumes but local inhabitants have been warned to keep their doors and windows shut.
