THE HAGUE – Parliament wants clarification on Turkish-Dutch soldiers who may be afraid to go to Turkey because they have not satisfied their compulsory military service there. They are therefore unable to do their duty for the Dutch military.

The request for clarification comes in response to a comment by CDA MP Karien van Gennip. She said that she has heard that several years ago Dutch soldiers of Turkish background did not go to Turkey to operate the Patriot defence missiles there.

They feared they could be arrested because they had not completed their military requirement for the Turkish state. Van Gennip wants to know whether these rumours are true.

The other factions were extremely surprised and adjourned a debate on the Turkish military service requirement. They first want to know if this is indeed the case.
