AMSTERDAM – The Amsterdam municipality wants to know from the club The Power Zone whether they plan to hold so-called "urban music and porn" parties on a regular basis. A party including pole dancers and live sex on stage was organised last weekend at the venue on the Spaklerweg.

"If this is an incidental occurrence then there isn't a problem. But if it turns out that this sort of party is regularly held than a different permit is needed, the kind that applies to venues in the red-light district for instance," said a spokesperson for the municipality on Thursday.

The Power Zone said it was the first and last time such an event was planned.

"We knew the party would be of an erotic nature, but not that it would be so explicit. We are letting the organisers of the party know today that we will no longer host any of their events," said spokesperson for the club Ron Vermeulen.

"Our business doesn't depend on these types of events. We organise 80 to 90 "normal" parties each year, while elsewhere in Amsterdam very unusual parties are being given where there are mattresses out on the floor."

The Labour party PvdA faction in Parliament asked Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin for clarification on the matter. The PvdA MPs Jeroen Dijsselbloem and Khadija Arib want to know whether these parties are a regular event and what the local government can do to stop them.
