MPs: artificial traffic jam is final resort
A parliamentary majority says it should be left up to the police to decide what means are appropriate to apprehend a suspect. MPs said that creating an artificial traffic jam to stop a vehicle should be used as a last resort.
Parliament on Tuesday debated Saturday’s incident in which a man was killed when a car carrying two suspects smashed into the rear end of a traffic jam created by the police.
The two coalition partners VVD conservatives and CDA Christian democrats and the pro-government Freedom Party said they were opposed to a ban on artificial traffic jams. The VVD and the Freedom party saw it as a last resort. The CDA said it did not want to dictate to police officers how they should do their jobs.
