AMSTERDAM — Independent right-wing MP Geert Wilders has offered a EUR 10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of thugs who attacked a woman, 49, and strangled her dog with its lead.

Wilders, who has faced death threats from Muslim extremists, called on Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende to multiply the reward tenfold.

The woman has a disability and was driving her scooter in Spijkenisse on Monday as she brought her dog a walk when the incident happened. Two young men assaulted her and she ended up in a trench with the scooter on top of her. As the woman had no money to give her attackers, they hung her dog from a fence by its lead.

Wilders said on Wednesday his computer has been flooded by emails from citizens incensed by the attack. He has written to Balkenende and Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner to demand action be taken to find and punish the thugs. He has put up EUR 10,000 to encourage people to come forward with information, and he wants the government to do the same.

The local animal protection society has offered a EUR 500 reward to find the people responsible for killing the dog.
