'Lung cancer is a political choice'

Lung cancer is a political choice and knowledge about the consequences of smoking is more extensive in China than in the Netherlands.

Director Lies van Gennip of the Dutch Expert Centre on Tobacco Control Stivoro made the above statement during a hearing on the government policy brief Health up Close Gezondheid dichtbij.

Ms Van Gennip’s statement was based on findings in the British Medical Journal. She once again expressed her astonishment about the government decision to cut Stivoro’s subsidies.

Health Minister Edith Schippers announced in June that the anti-smoking organisation will no longer receive any subsidies from 2013. And health insurance companies will no longer pay for medical assistance to help people quit smoking.

The hearing was organised by members of the Socialist Party, the Labour Party, the democrat party D66 and the Green Left party.

Dutch scientists and health institutes have recently sent a letter to the UK medical journal The Lancet about the consequences of Dutch smoking policies.
