‘Lord of the Rings’ voted best foreign book
Dutch readers have voted Tolkien’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ the best foreign book of all time.

THE HAGUE – Dutch readers have voted Tolkien’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ the best foreign book of all time. The survey was an initiative from broadcaster NPS and newspaper NRC Handelsblad. Ten titles were selected from the 300 books nominated by readers.
'Anna, Hanna en Johanna' from Swede Marianne Frederiksson came in second, followed by Tolstoy’s ‘War and Peace.’ The survey comes just a few days before the start of National Book Week.
Education Minister Plasterk wants secondary education teachers to give literature classes once again. Since the introduction of the new ‘studiehuis’ system little attention is paid to reading and that is unfortunate, he said.
