The council of the town of Ermelo in the east of the Netherlands has reintroduced a ban on swearing in public.

AMSTERDAM -- The council executive had removed the ban from the local bye-laws, because of the difficulty in enforcing it.

However, three Christian parties and a local party on the town council voted to retain the ban because of its symbolic value. There are 16 other town councils in the Netherlands which have a ban on swearing in public. Many of them, like Staphorst and Putten, are in the Dutch bible belt.
