Less pay for Dutch soldiers on Kunduz training mission

The varying regulations in use with the EU, NATO and the Netherlands have led to differences between the legal positions of soldiers and police officers who will be taking part in the Dutch training mission to the Afghan province of Kunduz.

The defence ministry has confirmed a report in national newspaper De Telegraaf, which reported that soldiers deployed to Afghanistan will earn 100 euros a day less than their colleagues from the police.

However, the defence ministry says that the soldiers will build up a double pension as well as other entitlements which could count double. The ministry said that it could well imagine that the 100 euros a day less for the soldiers could spark debate, but added that to the ministry it was for the moment nothing more than a statement of fact.
