AMSTERDAM — The Hilton Hotel in Rotterdam is to host a unique three-day exhibition of John Lennon's artwork.

The free event is to mark the 35th anniversary of the former Beatle's "bed-in for peace" with Yoko Ono in the Hilton Hotel in Amsterdam during their honeymoon in 1969. The main cause of strife at the time was the Vietnam War.

"The exhibition is particularly timely as the Netherlands – and Rotterdam in particular – really needs some peace right now," organiser Abigail Esman told Expatica.

"There is a lot of interest in the exhibition and I really hope people will leave it with feelings of peace," said Esman, of The Estate of John Lennon/Bag One Arts.

The exhibition, which runs from 12 to 14 November, features up to 200 prints of Lennon's sketches and many will be for sale, inclusive the handwritten text of his song Imagine.

Before his assassination in 1980, Lennon told Ono there were two things he still wanted to achieve: to record a new album and earn recognition for his artwork.

Esman said some of the works have been exhibited before but many are being shown for the first time.

There was a woman present in the hotel room in the Amsterdam Hilton during the couple's bed-in and never-seen-before notes she passed to Lennon and Ono in a bizarre interview process will also be displayed at the exhibition in Rotterdam.

In addition, Ono has provided a print of a drawing Lennon made for their son Sean for a special lottery at the exhibition. The public can buy tickets for EUR 10 each.

The proceeds of the lottery will go to the Dutch Doe Een Wens foundation, a charity that helps young people (aged 3 to 18) who are living with a life-threatening condition to realise their deepest wishes.

"The small winner will get the print and the big winners will be the children helped by the foundation," Esman said.
