AMSTERDAM – With an average income of EUR 11,500 per household the Vrijheidswijk-West neighbourhood in Leeuwarden is the least prosperous area in the Netherlands. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported this on Monday on the basis of figures from 2004. The CBS has made a list of more than 6,000 residential neighbourhoods throughout the Netherlands.

The northern and eastern parts of the country are overrepresented in the lower ranks of the list. The province of Friesland also has the second poorest neighbourhood, Harlingen-Plan-Zuid.

The other three in the "five worst-off neighbourhoods" are Almelo-Kerkelanden, Arnhem-Presikhaaf II and Leeuwarden-Hoek, all with average household income either at or under EUR 13,000 a year.

CBS only included neighbourhoods of at least 200 households in the study. Residents of institutions and nursing homes were not counted into the figures.

The large cities had relatively few poor neighbourhoods. The Hague is in the lead nationwide, however, with 11 poor neighbourhoods; Leeuwarden has ten, Rotterdam nine, and Almelo eight.

The richest neighbourhood in the Netherlands is in Wassenaar. The average household in Wassenaar-De Kieviet has an income of more than EUR 60,000. The Westbroekpark in The Hague comes in second with an average household income of about 55.000 euro.

Four of the richest neighbourhoods on the list are in Wassenaar, three in Bussem, and three in The Hague.

Of all the cities, The Hague shows the greatest contrasts in prosperity. On the whole the neighbourhoods closer to the dunes are richer, and those closer to the centre poorer.
