League leaders AZ consolidate top spot

Premier League leaders AZ have secured a solid 4-0 victory over De Graafshap, ending a disappointing series of matches, including draws against FC Malmö and Excelsior and a massive defeat against Heerenveen last week.

Adam Maher and Simon Poulsen scored in the first half. In the second, an own goal by Vito Wormgoor and a goal by substitute Charlison Benschop brought the final score to 4-0.

FC Twente beat NEC 2-0 thanks to second-half goals by Luuk de Jong and Nacer Chadli. FC Twente remain in second spot five points behind AZ.

Sc Heerenveen have notched up another huge victory, beating Excelsior 5-0 in an away game, with Bas Dost scoring all five goals and achieving a hat trick before half-time. With 14 goals, Dost is now the Premier League’s top scorer. Even so, Dost failed to write history as the club record is held by Afonso Alves, who scored seven times in a home game against Heracles. With two big wins in a row, sc Heerenveen remain in a comfortable fourth position.

PSV struggled to secure a narrow home win over NAC Breda. Dries Mertens scored the game’s single goal on 37 minutes. Jeremain Lens was sent off the pitch in injury time when he was shown yellow a second time. PSV remain on second, just four points behind League leaders AZ, but next week will face a redoubtable sc Heerenveen.
