Lawyers press-ganging criminal clients
A growing number of criminal lawyers are using illegal methods to recruit new clients.
A report published in the AD newspaper says lawyers are bribing criminals to bring in their colleagues as clients as well as spamming known criminals in an attempt to persuade them to retain their services.
Lawyer Job Knoester says some of his colleagues pay visits to criminals behind the backs of their own lawyers in an attempt to steal their clients, but it’s the bribes that Knoester is most concerned about.
He said it’s not just lawyers who are just starting out; criminal lawyers known as top-of-the-bill are reportedly also resorting to ‘press-ganging’ new clients. However, Mr Knoester refused to name any names.
In the AD report, the Dutch bar association says it is shocked by the allegations and calls on criminal lawyers to report any information they may have because these are serious violations of the professional code of conduct.
The bar association has called on its 19 deans, the association’s watch dogs, to be ‘alert’.
