AMSTERDAM – Rita Verdonk's departure from the Liberal VVD has resulted in a record number of membership cancellations and new memberships for the party. More than 1,500 VVD members terminated their membership over the past weeks. 600 new members have joined.

The chief executive of the VVD says the situation is unique. The party has never seen so many people leaving and joining the party in just a few weeks' time.

Former minister Verdonk was expelled from the VVD faction in September and terminated her membership in the party after being faced with an ultimatum. She recently started her own political movement, Trots op Nederland (Proud of the Netherlands).
