Kunduz police trainers return early

Seven military police returned from a police training mission in the Afghan province of Kunduz at the weekend as there were too few recruits for the Dutch trainers.

Last week the Dutch Ministry of Defence announced that it is cutting the number of trainers by half due to lack of recruits for the 8-week basic training course. The trainers in Afghanistan will be relieved by smaller teams. The current team of 13 trainers is due to return in the coming weeks.

The latest figures from the Afghan government and NATO show that more Dutch officers are working in Kunduz than were expected, according to the Defence Ministry. Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal and Defence Minsiter Hans Hillen will inform parliament by letter about the changes in requirements for the training mission and how these changes are being implemented. Parliament is due to debate the state of affairs on 9 November.
