AMSTERDAM — European Competition Minister Neelie Kroes insisted on Monday she was not aware that Somali-born MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali did not tell the full truth when she sought asylum in the Netherlands in 1992.

"Madam Kroes did not know Hirsi Ali was economical with the truth and that there were inaccuracies," the Commissioner's spokesperson said.

A leading member of the Dutch Liberal party (VVD), Kroes is a confidant of Hirsi Ali and played a leading role in persuading Hirsi Ali to switch allegiance from Labour (PvdA) to the VVD in 2002.

Kroes described Hirsi Ali at the time as someone who had experienced five civil wars in Somalia. But Hirsi Ali was a refugee in Kenya for 10 years before coming to the Netherlands.

"Even if Hirsi Ali had to live through three rather than five civil wars, she is still someone who had to endure a lot. She has not exactly grown up in a leafy suburb of Amsterdam from which she could cheerfully cycle to school everyday," the spokesperson added.

Hirsi Ali has said she told the leadership of the VVD about the lies when she joined the party. She later admitted on television that she had given a false name, date of birth and wrongly claimed to have arrived from Somalia when applying for asylum.
