THE HAGUE – After Wim Deetman announced his resignation as mayor of The Hague last Friday, the city council took the first steps in the search for a successor.

"I expect a new mayor can be appointed in the first quarter of 2008," Koen Baart (Labour PvdA), chairman of the executive, said on Tuesday.

"Deputy mayor Jetta Klijnsma will most likely stand in as mayor in the interval between Deetman's departure – on 1 January 2008 – and the appointment of the new mayor," Baart says. Klijnsma (Labour PvdA) is alderwoman of Culture and Finance.

The faction leaders of the political parties in The Hague will meet on Wednesday to discuss how matters will be handled. "We are going to discuss a candidate profile for instance. Perhaps we will publish this so that the city residents can contribute ideas if they wish," Baart says.
