Carnival celebrations have kicked off across the country, espcially in the south, where mayors in numerous towns and villages have symbolically handed over power to King Carnival.

THE NETHERLANDS - The festivities will go on until Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent's forty days of fasting leading up to Easter.

So far the global recession does not appear to have dampened the revellers' spritis.

A survey conducted by the catering branch has found that some 70 percent of the merrymakers intend to spend as much as last year, with ten over ten percent vowing to spend even more.

The survey identified the southern cities of Den Bosch and Maastricht as the most popular venues to celebrate carnival.
