AMSTERDAM – The Dutch head of security at German company Bilfinger Berger who was abducted in Nigeria in March has been released.
Security workers at western oil companies in Nigeria announced the news on Wednesday.
The kidnappers forced entry into a Bilfinger facility on 23 March and engaged in fire with guards. When the head of security came to see what was happening the kidnappers took him along. The Nigerian authorities sent the army out to hunt down the kidnappers.
Some 60 foreigners have been kidnapped in the troubled Niger delta since the beginning of this year. Most were released unharmed after a few days or weeks. The kidnappers tend to be a mix of criminal gangs and armed groups who want more political rights. It is unclear at the moment whether any ransom money was paid for the Dutchman.
