THE HAGUE – The Dutchman kidnapped in oil-rich southern Nigeria almost two weeks ago is alive and in good health. A spokesperson for the ministry of foreign affairs reported this on Thursday.

The Dutch embassy and local authorities have been working together to bring the matter to a good end. No further details could be given as the matter is still being dealt with.

The local police, cited by international press agencies, say that the man and three others were taken from an accommodation facility for foreigners in the city of Port Harcourt. Armed men disguised as riot police took the men from the facility owned by oil industry supplier Schlumberger. The other men taken were British, French and Pakistani.

Another Dutchman was kidnapped in the same area just over a month ago. He too is alive and in good health.

Kidnappings are quite common in southern Nigeria. Various armed groups are currently holding more than 20 foreigners hostage at the moment.
