LISSE - The Keukenhof gardens in Lisse has attracted fewer visitors this year than in 2007.

Opened from 20 March until 18 May, this year’s theme at Keukenhof garden was "The Beijing Olympic Games 2008".

In 2008, 815,000 people visited the famous bulb flower displays. Seven out of ten visitors came from abroad. Most of them were Germans, followed up by the French, Americans and Indians. Ten percent came from China.

The park celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2009.

I think contributing factors for the lower number of visitors this year has been (a) the weather and (b) the strength of the Euro.

The cool weather we've had so far probably kept many locals and other EU visitors away. In fact my parents are currently visiting from Malaysia and I've deferred taking them until the very last day on Sunday 18th May. Although sunny, the wind chill reduced temperatures to mid-teens. Visitors from the US probably find Europe an expensive place to visit due to the strong Euro.
