Kesler: World Cup critics are dried-up Calvinists
Professional football director Henk Kesler from the Royal Dutch Football Union has dismissed the critics of the joint Dutch-Belgian bid for the 2018 World Cup as "dried up Calvinists". He made his statement in an interview with newspaper. "We are always very good at coming up with reasons why something is not possible," he complained.
Mr Kesler pointed to comments made earlier by Christian Democrat MP Joop Atsma about Germany, which hosted the 2006 World Cup: "Did the German government make all kinds of concessions to the FIFA? No, it took place in accordance with German law and the FIFA rules. However, we Dutch still have a bit of the dried-up Calvinist in us. At least, there are a number of dried-up Calvinists who always know better. It's a spirit of the age and it's most destructive."
