AMSTERDAM – The new government coalition of Christian democrat CDA, Labour PvdA and ChristenUnie wants to investigate whether the right to life should be incorporated in the preamble to the Constitution.

Democrat D66 leader Alexander Pechtold does not think that is a good idea. “I oppose making ideologically based amendments to the constitution. That only sharpens the polemic in society. Everyone must be able to feel comfortable with the Constitution,” he said on Saturday.

Pechtold accused the PvdA in particular of helping to ensure that this ideology would also now pervade doctors’ surgeries by putting early pregnancy terminations – those that occur within 16 days following conception – under abortion legislation and by supporting the plan for doctors to point out alternatives to abortion to women.

The PvdA has always opposed these kinds of measures in the past. MP Chantal Gillárd of the PvdA responded to the criticism saying that she was satisfied that the accord allows abortion to remain legal.
