BRUSSELS – The value added tax on condoms throughout the EU should be kept to a minimum. The PvdA and other social democrats in the European Parliament are urging for this. They hope this will help stop the spread of HIV and AIDS in Europe.

EU members set the VAT rate for condoms in their respective countries. In Sweden and Denmark they are taxed at 25 percent. In the Netherlands condoms are already in the lower VAT bracket of 6 percent. The legal minimum in the EU is 5 percent.

Leading the campaign is PvdA member Jan Marinus Wiersma. "There is a general upward trend in the number of AIDS cases in the EU countries. Lowering the VAT to the minimum is a practical step in the fight against AIDS and a powerful symbolic gesture for World AIDS Day," Wiersma says.

The petition on lowering the VAT can be found on the internet at: www.socialistgroup.eu. The results will be presented to the EU governments before World AIDS Day on 1 December.
