AMSTERDAM – The man from the village of Hengelo in Gelderland presumed to have played a part in the death of his wife and children has been charged with murder. The public prosecution department (OM) announced this on Friday.

The OM suspects that both parents had decided to end their lives and "take their children and dog with them." The reason for the suicide pact was the family's debts. This has emerged from a letter the police found in the home.

The mother and sons most likely died from an overdose of medicine, the OM reports. The father took the medicine as well, but survived. He was arraigned in court today; the judge ruled that the justice department may keep him in custody for another two weeks.
