AMSTERDAM – The public prosecution department asked in court in Amsterdam on Tuesday that Lorenzo M. be sentenced to 12 years in prison for the kidnapping of Claudia Melchers.

The prosecution regards M., a relative of the other main suspect Izaan M., as the brains behind the kidnapping of Melchers in September 2005.

Though Lorenzo was not physically present at the kidnapping, the prosecution says it is incomprehensible that he did not play a part. The suspect denies involvement in the case. Lorenzo says the incriminating testimony against him from Izaan M. are the words of a "madman."

Claudia Melchers was abducted from her home in Amsterdam on 12 September 2005. Three days later her kidnappers released her near Arnhem.  They were demanding 300 kilos of cocaine as ransom; Melchers promised them EUR 5 million instead. That money was never paid.

The court is expected to announce its verdict on 1 May.
