Joran van der Sloot trial adjourned

The first day of the trial of Joran van der Sloot has been adjourned at the last minute. Van der Sloot was appearing in court in the Peruvian capital Lima in connection with the murder of 21-year old Peruvian student Stephany Flores.

The judge decided to postpone the session for one week since the Dutchman no longer has a defence counsel. Defence lawyer Máximo Altez withdrew last week following a dispute with his client.

Joran van der Sloot did, however, briefly come face to face with Stephany’s father Ricardo Flores in the courtroom. Flores commented: “It was painful to see him in the flesh, particularly the fact that he is in such good physical health.”

Stephany Flores was found dead in Van der Sloot’s hotel room in Lima a year ago. He was arrested in Chile a few days later.
