Joran van der Sloot keeps silent as trial begins
Joran van der Sloot remained silent as in an initial closed-door session in his trial with Judge Carlos Morales in Lima, according Peruvian daily .
Mr Morales spent less than an hour in Van der Sloot’s cell in the Miguel Castro Castro jail. Van der Sloot’s lawyer Máximo Altez was also present. Mr Altez made no comment to waiting journalists as he left the prison.
Joran van der Sloot’s silence is a tactic to push for the withdrawal as evidence of his confession to the murder of Stephany Flores in a Lima hotel on 30 May. He told Dutch daily that the police tricked him into confessing by promising he would be extradited to the Netherlands. He said he signed the confession in a “blind panic”.
