Joran van der Sloot in court
Joran van der Sloot will appear in court on Wednesday, along with the father of the woman he is charged with murdering, Stephany Flores. The court is to hear evidence on the belongings of Stephany Flores that were found in Van der Sloot’s possession on his arrest, according to Peruvian media reports.
The hearing will take place in the Castro Castro jail, where Van der Sloot has been detained since June. He is charged with murdering the 21-year-old Stephany Flores on 30 May 2010 in a Lima hotel room.
Van der Sloot’s lawyer, Máximo Altez, said he was withdrawing from the case at the end of May due to a difference in opinion on defence strategy. He says he will continue to defend Van der Sloot until a new lawyer is found.
Mr Altez told Radio Netherlands Worldwide that he believed fundamental errors had been made in the police investigation.
Carlos Flores, Stephany Flores’ father, was recently elected to parliament.
