THE HAGUE – The court in The Hague sentenced 26-year-old Sassenheim man Johan S. to ten years in prison for several counts of rape and one count of molestation.

Johan S. drugged his victims with valium before assaulting them. He has continued to deny the accusations.

The court imposed a lighter penalty than the 16 years demanded by the prosecution (OM). This was partly because the suspect was acquitted in one of the five cases for which he was standing trial.

The court also found that the heavy penalty demanded by the OM was "not in proportion to the sex offences S. committed."

Johan S. was arrested in Brazil and extradited to the Netherlands to stand trial. The justice department plans to try him on another three charges.
