AMSTERDAM — The Dutch driver of the truck in which 58 Chinese illegal immigrants suffocated to death had his jail sentence reduced in Rotterdam Court on Wednesday to 10 years and six months.

The driver, identified as Perry W., was convicted of manslaughter by a British court in April 2001 and sentenced to 14 years jail.

As he wished to serve out his sentence in the Netherlands, a Dutch court had to convert his sentence to conform with sentencing policy in the here, news agency ANP reported.

In June 2000, W. drove his truck loaded with 60 illegal Chinese immigrants onto the ferry at Zeebrugge in Belgium for the crossing to Dover.

To avoid anyone hearing the illegal "cargo", W. closed the air vents and 58 of the Chinese suffocated to death. Their bodies were found upon inspection of the truck at Dover.

Besides W. nine other people were found guilty of involvement in the smuggling operation, including two Chinese, and jailed for up to 10.5 years in the Netherlands, AFP reported.
