Eating from your own garden, is not just healthier, it also makes you happier. That’s what author Toor de Haas writes in her recipe of life book Simply Happy.

The book is not just packed with cheap recipes for under 50 eurocents, it also gives tips on how to appreciate life more. Enjoyment is the key: “If you can enjoy something, it is incredibly valuable.”

Toor thinks it is important to enjoy the little things, especially when you are poor. “Because if you really enjoy something, what else do you need?” Her lesson of life is therefore: if you are poor, you do not need to be dependent on benefits or handouts.
You can look after yourself and enjoy life at the same time. For instance, you do not need a lot of room to grow your own herbs and vegetables. “It makes you independent and at the same time it gives you satisfaction.”
