Its going to be a long, cold winter...

Long-term weather forecasts for the Netherlands are pointing to a colder-than-usual winter this year.

A number of different types of businesses are already making preparations. Power companies, for instance, have already started buying more power and natural gas for the winter months.

Many local councils also take the predictions seriously. Rotterdam has ordered an additional one million kilos of salt to prevent last year’s shortages, a spokesperson for the port city said.

Rail network operator ProRail has announced a raft of measures to prevent the major problems that hit the public rail service last winter. Timetables will be adjusted when bad weather is forecast for the coming days. The organisation says that on such days trains will only travel on routes which have heated points.

ProRail is also conducting experiments with a non-stick-type coating in an attempt to prevent the problems caused by chunks of snow and ice clinging to the underside of trains.
