AMSTERDAM – Princess Máxima gave birth to a daughter at the Bronovo hospital in The Hague last night just before 10 pm. The child is fourth in line to the throne, after Prince Willem-Alexander and the couple's two elder daughters princesses Catharina-Amalia and Alexia.

"We are very grateful for the birth of this healthy baby," said the father, the Prince of Orange. The new baby weighs in at 4,135 g and measures 52 cm.

Princess Máxima stayed the night at the hospital, as she did after the birth of her second baby Princess Alexia.

Queen Beatrix and Máxima's parents arrived at the hospital as soon as the baby was born. The Dutch bishops were among the first to congratulate the royal couple and Prime Minister Jan-Peter Balkenende congratulated the family in a speech broadcast on the radio and television.

The baby is expected to be shown to the public and press for this first time this morning.
