Israeli fire fighters 'cautiously optimistic'
In Israel, fire fighters have been increasingly successful in bringing the wild fires raging near the city of Haifa under control. The commander coordinating the efforts says he is cautiously optimistic. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports that the fires are now limited to four locations.
The Netherlands has sent four helicopters to Israel to assist in the fire-fighting operations, three Cougars and a Chinook. Greece, Turkey and Cyprus have also sent fire-fighting planes to Haifa. And Palestinian fire fighters have been assisting their Israeli colleagues.
So far, the wildfires have claimed 42 lives, most of them were in a bus which was trapped in the inferno by a fallen tree. The fires in northern Israel are the worst in the country's history.
